Kicking off GOTV & Continuing Outreach to #Nix2Through6 City Ballot Measures

Katal Social Work Interns Aarthi & Alvin tabling at Harry Belafonte Library, 10.04.24

We’re less than a month away from the November 5th elections and New Yorkers have until Saturday, October 26 to register to vote. Click here to register to vote. You can also get information on the upcoming elections and polling places, look up your elected officials, and more.

Last week, we kicked off our Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts to ensure that New Yorkers, particularly those in communities most affected by mass incarceration and mass criminalization, are registered to vote. On Friday, October 4th, we held a tabling session at the Harry Belafonte Library in Harlem. Throughout the summer, we talked to thousands of community members in Harlem about our Shut Rikers campaign and now we’re back uptown getting folks registered to vote.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue to hold tabling sessions at public libraries across the five boroughs to register people to vote. Here is a schedule of our upcoming GOTV tabling sessions:

  • Friday, October 11th from 1-5pm at Cypress Hills Public Library in Brooklyn
  • Friday, October 18th from 2-6pm in at the Brownsville Public Library in Brooklyn
  • Monday, October 21st from 2-6pm at the Walt Whitman Public Library in Brooklyn
  • Monday, October 21st from 2-6pm at the Grand Concourse Public Library in the Bronx

If you live near any of the libraries, feel free to stop by! We’ll be adding more locations in the coming days to our GOTV outreach session, please be on the lookout.

Contact our apprentice community organizer, Lakenya at Lakenya@katalcenter.org, if you’d like us to schedule a GOTV session in your neighborhood.

#Nix2through6 Outreach outside Broadway Junction Subway Station, 10.01.24

Last week, we also continued our outreach and organizing around the No Power Grab NYC campaign to defend democracy and defeat Mayor Adams’ attempt to enact dangerous and anti-democratic changes to New York City’s charter (NYC’s constitution) including making it harder to hold police and correction officers accountable.

On Tuesday, October 1st, we held an outreach session at the Broadway Junction subway station in Brookyn during rush hour. We spoke to community members and street vendors about why they should #Nix2Through6. Join us in taking this pledge to vote NO on propositions 2-6  #NIX2through6

Next Wednesday, Oct. 16th: #Shutrikers Phone Zap

Join us next Wednesday, October 16th from 12-1pm for our bi-weekly Shut Rikers Phone Zap via Zoom. You can RSVP here

During our last Shut Rikers Phone Zap, we got confirmation that City Council Member Rita Joseph signed on as a sponsor of  Resolution 183. This puts us at 23 sponsors and gets us one step closer to passing this resolution. With the federal courts moving closer to receivership at Rikers and the Mayor facing federal criminal charges, this is a critical time for us to keep the pressure up and demand the City Council take urgent action to address the crisis at Rikers.

Join us in calling New York City Council members to demand that they pass Resolution 183, which calls on the federal courts to immediately appoint an independent receiver to take over Rikers and improve conditions until it is shut down.

Any questions? Reach out to Aryssa at aryssa@katalcenter.org

Katal Quotes of the Week

These are some of the quotes we’re thinking about this week.

“And who will join this standing up

and the ones who stood without sweet company

will sing and sing

back into the mountains and

if necessary

even under the sea:

we are the ones we have been waiting for.”

―June Jordan

“I found a considerable lack of work after doing concerts for Palestinian children.. if that’s the way it has to be, that’s the way it has to be. If you support human rights, you gotta support them everywhere.” –Kris Kristofferson
