tonight in hartford: join us for ever after
Tonight in Hartford, in partnership with Common Justice, Katal is hosting Ever After: Stories of Violence, Accountability and Healing — a national event where new videos about healing, safety, and accountability after violence will be live-streamed. Groups in nearly 25 cities will live-stream the main event in NYC and facilitate conversations to connect the content to local issues, campaigns, and visions for addressing violence. At our event in Hartford, hosted by the Greater Hartford Harm Reduction Coalition, we’ll show a series of short videos that will highlight people who have survived or committed violence, followed by a community discussion facilitated by Katal’s Louis Reed. The event is free and light refreshments will be served.

prosecutors call for end to the overuse of probation and parole
Today, more than 40 prosecutors, including over 30 elected prosecutors who are currently serving in office — joined this statement calling for robust changes to community corrections practices. These prosecutors join more than 70 other prominent law enforcement, criminal justice, probation and parole leaders who have also signed the statement, which is managed by the Justice Lab at Columbia University. Katal applauds the three New York District Attorneys who joined this statement — and now, as part of our Less Is More Campaign (#LessIsMoreNY) we’re calling on state leaders in New York to implement legislative reforms that will restructure the parole and probation systems. katal leaders and members teach class at john jay
Last week, Katal leaders, members, and staff were at John Jay College to teach students about mass incarceration and bail. The African American History class, led by Professor Sami Disu, is presently studying mass incarceration and the disenfranchisement of Black communities over time. In their class last week, the Katal team facilitated our “Incarcerated Community” role playing game to drive home the realities of mass criminalization and our broken bail system, and talk about the fight for reform. We appreciate the invitation by Professor Disu!
