Tonight: Rochester Town Hall about #LessIsMoreNY

This evening we’re holding a #LessIsMoreNY Town Hall hosted by Assemblymember Demond Meeks and Assemblymember Sarah Clark. The town hall will take place over zoom, from 5-6:30 PM. We’ll share updates on implementation of Less Is More, and discuss what will happen with the resources saved by this historic reform. Less is More is estimated to save state taxpayers more than $500 million annually. What would you like to see happen with these funds? Join us for the town hall tonight to share your vision. Register here to attend.

Nearly 13,000 people have been discharged from parole as a result of Less Is More, and approximately 2,000 people were released from jails and prisons. That’s thousands of people who are benefiting from the law. Check out some of their stories on our new #LessIsMoreNY stories page

Bronx Outreach to Cut, Shut, Invest

Katal members Henry & Lily door knocking in the Melrose Neighborhood of the Bronx

This week we were door knocking and flyering in the South Bronx. Our organizers and members spoke to community members about the ongoing crisis on Rikers Island. On Monday, the 12th person this year passed away on Rikers. Last year was among the deadliest on record at Rikers, and 2022 is on track to exceed this grisly benchmark. We issued a statement from our member Henry in response to the recent death. Here is an excerpt:

“12 people have passed away this year alone and Mayor Adams has done absolutely nothing to address this crisis. There are family members in our communities right now that are terrified and live in constant fear of getting the call that their loved one is dead. This was the fear my family had while I was stuck on Rikers and I don’t wish that upon anybody.”
