Statement from gabriel sayegh, Co-Founder & Co-Director, Katal Center for Health, Equity, and Justice

on the New York State Assembly Passing Kalief’s Law

“It’s clear that New York’s pretrial justice system is broken. Kalief’s Law, passed yesterday by the Assembly, is a huge step toward fixing the problem. It will address glaring problems in New York’s speedy trial statute, making it more fair and just, while saving taxpayers money by reducing unnecessary pretrial detention periods.  Sponsored by longtime reform champion Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry and now passed for the third time by the Assembly under Speaker Heastie’s leadership, Kalief’s Law moves New York in the right direction for reform.

We appreciate the work of Assemblyman Aubry, Speaker Heastie, and the Assembly Majority in prioritizing speedy trial reform. The Senate should follow suit and pass Kalief’s Law, and the governor should sign it.  The time for reform is now.”
