“Yesterday, Governor Cuomo committed to undoing a longstanding injustice by restoring the voting rights of thousands of previously disenfranchised New Yorkers under parole supervision. It is no secret that the effect of denying people under parole supervision the right to fully participate in our civic democracy falls disproportionately on people of color. The Governor’s welcomed move is a step in the right direction to repair some of the harms of our criminal justice system. Now, it is time for all of our legislators in Albany to come together and pass a criminal justice reform package that would eliminate the race and wealth-based disparities that continue to undermine New York’s Black and Latino communities through our criminal justice system – including meaningful, progressive reforms to New York’s parole, bail, speedy trial, and discovery laws.”
