Tell Gov. Lamont: Keep CJTS Closed and #CutShutINVEST

In late March, Governor Lamont proposed re-opening a closed youth prison in Connecticut in order to “house” unaccompanied children migrating to the U.S.

The prison — the Connecticut Juvenile Training School (CJTS) – was closed in 2018. It has a documented and notorious history of neglect and abuse of young people, ranging from the use of chemical agents, excessive restraint, and solitary confinement. To suggest that it be re-opened to detain children migrating to the United States is reprehensible. Connecticut should be closing MORE prisons, not re-opening closed prisons to detain people searching for a better life!

We, the undersigned, call upon Governor Lamont to close prisons and to dismantle currently closed prisons – including the Connecticut Juvenile Training School – so they cannot be used again. CJTS is an inappropriate and unacceptable place for human beings, including children migrating to the United States. CJTS must be permanently destroyed – not held in reserve to re-open to jail children from CT, from the border, or from anywhere else.

Instead of looking for ways to cage more vulnerable people, Governor Lamont must move to cut correctional populations statewide, shut down more prisons and jails, and invest in the communities most harmed by systemic racism and mass incarceration.
