#CloseRikers Rally

Katal Center

The federal monitor assigned to Rikers Island recently issued a damning report, where they recommended that the federal judge consider holding the Adams administration in contempt for its failure to implement the promised improvements at Rikers. In July, at least four people died in the custody of the New York City Department of Correction. As August began, the total death toll in city jails under Mayor Adams was at least 26. It is clear that the DOC and the mayor are unwilling to address the long-standing issues plaguing the jail system. Violence is out of control and people’s lives are at stake.

Until Rikers is closed, the federal courts must appoint a receiver to take over and improve conditions for people who are detained or employed there. Please join us on Thursday, August 10th, at 12:30 pm at City Hall before the next hearing for a march to Foley Square and a rally at 1 p.m. to demand:

  •  Federal courts appoint a receiver to take over and improve conditions for people who are detained and employed at Rikers
  •  And that Mayor Eric Adams; cut the jail population and correctional budgets, shut down the jail complex, and invest in real community safety: housing, health care, education, and jobs.
