Fix Probation Action Tools

While the probation system was created to be an alternative to incarceration, it has instead become a direct pipeline into the system. Over 30,000 people—three times the incarcerated population—are on probation in Connecticut, and more than one-third of all prison admissions are due to probation violations, often for noncriminal technical issues like missing curfew or testing positive for substances. These unnecessary incarcerations destabilize lives, especially in low-income and BIPOC communities.

Proposed H.B. 6361 aims to change that by eliminating incarceration for noncriminal technical violations, introducing earned time credit, and removing burdensome supervision fees. These reforms will break this cycle, reduce caseloads, incentivize success, and make the system fairer for all.

To take action:

  • Use this tool to contact your representatives and urge lawmakers to support H.B. 6361
  • Share your experience by filling out our Justice Impact Survey to connect with us and our campaign.
