Black Farmers Fighting Back

Last week, Cultivating Justice partner Lovie’s Farm was served a cease and desist letter for farming on their own land. We turned out at the Inland Wetlands & Watercourses Agency hearing with Lovie’s Farm owner Matt Mitchell to push back. Some of the exchange was captured in this TikTok video which has more than 50,000 views.

The local paper, The Middletown Press, ran a detailed story featuring Cultivating Justice.

In Connecticut, 98% of the registered farmers at white. One factor for this disparity is that new farmers who are Black, Indigenous, Latine, or other people of color – like Matt at Lovie’s Farm –  are subject to increased scrutiny under questionable circumstances.

Take action to support Lovie’s Farm by signing this petition to the IWWA.  And follow our Cultivating Justice project on Instagram here.

The situation in Middletown is unfolding, and we’ll keep you updated. If you’d like to learn more about Cultivating Justice, please reach out to Diana at diana@katalcenter.org.

Canvassing to #CutShutInvestCT

It’s June and we’ve launched our summer canvassing project!

Every week, Katal is out in the streets meeting with community members about

  • cutting the correctional population and the budgets used for criminalizing people;
  • shutting down prisons and jails;
  • and investing in real community safety: housing, health care, education, jobs.

If you’d like to join us on an outreach session, please reach out to us at Alycia@katalcenter.org
