Weaver High School Career Fair
Advocacy Coordinator, Taina and Apprentice Community Organizer, Jaymiah tabling at Weaver High School Career Fair, 3.21.25
On Friday, March 21st, we had the opportunity to attend Weaver High School’s 2nd Annual College and Career Fair in Hartford. At our table, we connected with students to discuss the power of community organizing and what a career in advocacy and social justice can look like.
Beyond career pathways, we engaged in meaningful conversations about the impact of the criminal legal system on low income communities and communities of color. Together, we explored how reinvesting in things like housing, education, and youth programs rather than punishment can create real public safety and build stronger communities.
It was inspiring to hear students’ perspectives, and we look forward to continuing these conversations in the future.
Got an upcoming event we can table at? Reach out to Taina@katalcenter.org.
Fixing Probation in Connecticut
Rather than serving as an alternative to incarceration, Connecticut’s probation system has become a direct pipeline to prison—perpetuating cycles of incarceration instead of rehabilitation. H.B. 6361 will disrupt this cycle and create a probation system that fulfills its intended purpose by eliminating incarceration for noncriminal technical violations, introducing earned time credit, and removing financial barriers. Want to get involved? Here are a few ways to do so:
For individuals: If you or your loved ones have been impacted by Connecticut’s probation system, we want to hear from you! Fill out our Justice Impact Survey! All responses are confidential, though not anonymous, so only share what you’re comfortable with. Once completed, we’ll follow up with you.
For organizations: If your group / organization believes in a fairer, more just probation system, we invite you to support H.B. 6361 by signing on to our Organizational Support Letter today!
Make sure to check out our fact sheet about fixing probation in Connecticut. And if you have any questions, or want to learn more, contact Advocacy Coordinator Taina Manick at Taina@katalcenter.org
