Rally to Protect Bail & Close Rikers: Tues 2/23 at 12pm

Rikers is in a state of crisis, yet Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed gutting bail reform, which would lead to thousands of more people – mostly Black and Brown folks – being jailed at Rikers Island. We’re fighting back! Join us on Tuesday, February 28th at 12 pm outside Gov. Hochul’s NYC office to say: No more bail rollbacks! Close Rikers Now!

Further rollbacks to bail reform could lead to thousands more people jailed at Rikers and in other jails across New York. The Governor’s proposal would also derail the planned closure of the Rikers Island Jail Complex.

The state budget (and the City budget for that matter) must work to cut correctional populations, shut down Rikers and other deadly jails across New York, and invest in real public safety: housing, health care, education, and jobs. Please join us on Tuesday, February 28th at 12 pm outside Governor Hochul’s NYC Office 633 3rd Ave (Subway to Grand Central Station) to tell Governor Hochul: No more Bail Rollbacks! Close Rikers Now! RSVP for the action here!

Upcoming Close Rikers Phone Banking Session

Since Mayor Adams took office, 20 people have died in New York City jails and Rikers is the deadliest it’s been in 25 years. Instead of working to save lives and shut down Rikers, Mayor Adams is calling for bail rollbacks so more people can be incarcerated there. This is unacceptable. Join us next Thursday, March 2 from 5:00-6:00 pm via Zoom for our Close Rikers Phone Banking Session. We’ll be calling community members across the city to discuss the need to shut down Rikers and invest in communities. Register for the phone banking session here!
