Organizing to Get Out the Vote and Stop Mayor Adams’ Power Grab on the November Ballot
Katal Team doing outreach outside Brownsville Library, 10.18.24
With the November elections less than two weeks away, we’ve continued our Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts across the city. This Saturday, October 26th, is the last day to register to vote and the start of early voting in NYC! Click here to register to vote. You can also get more information on the upcoming elections and polling places, look up your elected officials, and more.
Last week, our outreach team spent several days in Brownsville, knocking on hundreds of doors, tabling outside the Brownsville Public Library, and joining the Brownsville Safety Alliance (BSA) on Pitkin Avenue for their Community Safety Fair to offer immediate resources and information to the community.
On Monday, our team was in Brooklyn at the Walt Whitman Public Library and the Bronx at the Grand Concourse Public Library. We registered people to vote, helped folks create voting plans, and shared information about Mayor Adams’ dangerous and un-democratic power grab on the November ballot.

Yesterday, we held a virtual conversation with the No Power Grab NYC campaign. We spoke about how Propositions 2-6 are a sneaky move by Mayor Adams to change NYC’s charter (our city’s constitution), grab more unchecked power for himself and his interests, weaken checks and balances, and make it harder for the city to deliver essential services for New Yorkers. These measures also make it harder to hold the NYPD and Department of Correction accountable. We’re urging voters to reject Mayor Adams’ last-minute attempt to change NYC’s constitution and Vote No on Props 2-6.
Tomorrow, we’re making a big push to register people to vote ahead of Saturday’s voter registration deadline. We’re holding tabling sessions in Harlem and Brooklyn. Join us tomorrow from 2 -5 pm at the following locations:
- Hamilton Grange Public Library in Harlem
- Crown Heights Public Library in Brooklyn
If you would like to join us tomorrow, please reach out to our organizing director Melanie at melanie@katalcenter.org.
Tonight at 6 pm: Intro to Shut Rikers Meeting!

Wednesday 10/30: #ShutRikers Phone Zap
Join us next Wednesday, October 30th, from 12 to 1 p.m. for our Shut Rikers Phone Zap via Zoom! You can RSVP here.
We will be calling New York City Council members to demand that they take immediate action to end the suffering and violence at Rikers.
Since Adams took office, at least 33 people have died in Department of Correction custody, and people with severe mental health conditions are locked in their cells for weeks and even months without receiving treatment. The City Council must swiftly pass Resolution 183, urging the federal courts to appoint an independent receiver to take over Rikers and improve conditions until it is shut down.
