Katal in City Limits: How New York is Failing Those Left Behind at Rikers Island

In our latest opinion editorial special to City Limits, Katal’s Director of Policy, Erin Corbett, and Director of Health and Harm Reduction, Keith Brown, address how New York is failing people left behind on Rikers. This session, Governor Cuomo and legislators failed to pass legislation that would decarcerate and save lives, and their inaction has implications for the now multi-year effort to finally shutter Rikers Island.
This piece follows a story by the Gothamist which details how Shazaad Husein was reincarcerated for a technical violation of parole, and was then forced to choose between remaining detained on Rikers or stopping the addiction treatment he was receiving. It’s a harrowing story.
This summer, we’re continuing our organizing work to fix the parole crisis in New York so we can decarcerate and close Rikers once and for all.

In Connecticut: Join Us for “A Community Conversation: Harm Reduction in New Haven”
Join our Healthy & Just CT Coalition Wednesday, July 31 from 6:00 – 7:45 pm at the New Haven Free Public Library (Ives Branch) for a Community Conversation on Harm Reduction in New Haven! Throughout this conversation, we will be discussing the history of harm reduction and the latest trends within the field. We will also hear from impacted residents of New Haven and harm reduction advocates on how we can realize our goal to advance health, equity, and justice in our city.
